NIH Representative in Mali/NIAID Director of the Mali Research Support office
Fatoumata Bathily has served as the NIH Representative in Mali/NIAID Director of the Mali Research Support office for the past 5 years. In 2016, she became the dual NIH Representative in Mali and Senegal.
Before joining NIH/NIAID in 2015, Bathily worked in the Africa bureau of the Office of Global Affairs (OGA) in the Office of the Secretary at HHS for four years. Fatoumata Bathily joined HHS as an Emerging Leader Fellow in 2008 and rotated through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the Office of Refugee Resettlement and OGA. While at OGA, Bathily went on an extended TDY to the Democratic Republic of Congo and worked with the Embassy interagency team to develop and write the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief Country Operational Plan.
Bathily was responsible for all secretarial briefings on and events related to health issues in Africa at OGA. As a result, she was able to liaise with HHS agencies that have Africa-related portfolios and other departments such as, USAID, State, Treasury and Commerce. She also worked with African countries’ Ministries of Health to assist in the implementation of goals they brought to the attention of the Secretary’s office.
Prior to joining HHS, Bathily worked for a non-profit organization that serves homeless families in the Greater Washington, DC area from 2003 to 2006.
