Malaria researchers from the NIH/NIAID Division of Intramural Research initiated a collaboration with Mali focused on malaria entomology.
Dr.Richard Sakai was posted as the NIH/NIAID resident scientist in Mali.
The Malaria Research and Training Center (MRTC) was established by an agreement between the National School of Medicine and NIAID.
MRTC successfully competed for the prestigious NIH/NIAID extramural Tropical Medicine Research Center (TMRC) award.
MRTC became part of the Mali International Center for Excellence in Research (ICER) sponsored by NIAID.
At the Government of Mali’s request, NIAID’s Division of Clinical Research (DCR) initiated a collaborative HIV and TB research program with USTTB known as SEREFO.
The Mali Service Center (MSC) was established to provide administrative/financial support for grant and contract funds.
NIH/NIAID Mali Research Support Office was created to ensure efficient management of research programs and provide NIAID representation in Mali.
The first certified biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory in Mali (and all of West Africa) was established at USTTB.
The University Clinical Research Center (UCRC) incorporated SEREFO and was established to enhance clinical research infrastructure in Mali and the surrounding region.
